IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)

Do you have bouts of constipation or diarrhoea ?

Do you suffer from pain or bloating?

Are you digestive symptoms affecting your quality of life?

Are you suffering but all the tests are showing nothing is wrong?

Then, like up to 1 in 5 of the Australian population, you may have IBS. Symptoms of IBS vary from person to person with attacks lasting hours, days or weeks, and may be diarrhoea-predominant, constipation-predominant, and alternating constipation and diarrhoea. But those are just names, and IBS may be affecting your energy, lifestyle and controlling what you can eat!

You don’t have to live like this …

Symptoms may include:

Abdominal pain
Urgent bowel movements or diarrhoea
Constipation
Excessive or offensive wind
Bloating or a feeling of fullness
Erratic bowel movements

What causes IBS?

The cause of IBS may not be clear and varies from person to person based on genetics, lifestyle, history and diet. It may occur soon after an attack of gastroenteritis (diarrhoea). It is thought that toxins released during the infection may damage nerves, which in turn can cause abnormal muscular contraction of the bowel, especially when stressed. For others, it may be a gluten intolerance or it may be that you can’t tolerate FODMAPS.

If you suspect you have IBS, it is first important to seek medical advice to ensure your symptoms aren’t caused by another illness e.g. coeliac disease. (We can work with your doctor)
