Curious about why you’re experiencing discomfort after eating certain foods?
At our clinic, we take a different approach to food sensitivities and intolerances than ‘conventional’ medicine specialists. Rather than simply addressing the symptoms, we work to uncover the root causes of your reactions and examine the impact that your diet and lifestyle have on your gut health.
Food sensitivities and intolerances are caused by the body’s inability to properly digest or react to certain foods. While they may share some similarities, these two conditions differ in their underlying mechanisms:
- Food Sensitivities: These involve an immune system response to specific food proteins. The immune system mistakenly identifies these proteins as harmful and mounts an inflammatory response.
- Food Intolerances: These occur when the body lacks the enzymes needed to break down and absorb certain components of food, such as lactose in dairy or fructose in fruits. This leads to digestive symptoms.
Common triggers for food sensitivities and intolerances include dairy products, gluten, eggs, soy, and certain food additives. Stress, poor gut health, and genetic predispositions can also contribute to the development of these conditions. Many people with an underlying gut issue, are also sensitive to high FODMAP foods.
